Half of British Workers Call for the End of Monthly Payment Day
- Nearly half (46%) employees want to cancel monthly salary to access wages based on requests.
- Two-thirds will access pay more than once a month if given often options to cover bills, daily costs, or to avoid debt.
- Nearly half (48%) says a employer who offers wage access obtained is more attractive than not.
London, September 16, 2025: Nearly half (46%) British employees want to cancel traditional monthly payday and instead access their income whenever they need it, according to new research from the leading Software Group Software Technology software provider.
The wage access obtained, is also known as payment on request, allows employees to withdraw some of their wages that have been obtained before the salary is scheduled, rather than waiting for the traditional monthly payment cycle. Of the 1,000 workers surveyed by Iris, 46% said they would prefer wages according to demand, with 29% neutral further on the idea. More than half (52%) said they could access their salaries when they were suitable for them would help them manage the increase in living costs, while the same amount (51%) felt it would give them greater control over their finances.
When asked how they would use payments as requests, respondents said it would help them cover unexpected bills (43%), manage daily expenses (40%), and reduce dependence on debt such as credit cards or cups (29%).
Two thirds (66%) say they will access their salaries for more than a month if they can, with 22% say they will access it every week, 12% two weeks, and 6% every day. More than a quarter (27%) says they will only use it more than once a month, with 33% prefer to keep using monthly access.
This finding shows the old tradition of the monthly-convention of workplace derived from 100 years of mature for interference, because employees seek greater financial controls to fight living expenses and improve financial welfare. Nearly half (48%) agreed that the employer who provides wage access obtained will be more attractive than not, compared to only 7% who disagree.

While the majority of workers see clear benefits, the minority (21%) states concerns that payments according to demand can make them feel less controlling their finances. Their top concerns include excessive expenditure, disrupting monthly budgeting routines, and not in harmony with the monthly billing cycle. Nearly a quarter says they will oppose their employers who offer payments on request. For this reason, the joint solution of iris and level includes a variety of protection, monitoring of proactive use and full compliance of the professional practical practice code of the Professional Payroll Institute (where the level is a co-founder).
This study also explores the role of employers in financial welfare. When asked whether it is fair to make the employer responsible if an employee experiences money problems after accessing wages earlier, most say no – believe it depends on individuals to manage their own money. However, almost a quarter (23%) feels the employer is responsible, with 13% saying responsibility must be distributed.
